One of the best parts of our job is working with people. Our patients teach us more than they know. Every single day is a lesson for us. And we truly take to heart the conversations we have with everyone. We love to celebrate with our patients! But our hearts also break when our patient’s hearts break. It’s so easy to just go about your day thinking of what’s happening in your life and not realizing what others are going through. But our job forces us out of your own world and gives us a glimpse of what is going on around us. For us it’s so eye opening and has grown our empathy and compassion towards people. It’s so important to remember that everyone is going through things! We hear the quote “everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about,” and its so true! That quote has become very real to us!
We have gone through situations and looked back thinking, if patients only knew what we were going through at that time. But we had on our happy face and went to work. We all have those moments. A lot of people are anti New Year resolutions. We happen to be resolution people. For us a resolution means hope and an opportunity to make things a little better. We say it all the time, but New Year’s to us is a RESET button! It’s hope! A little sigh of relief that everything starts over and hopefully will be better.
We’ve made our mission Food, Fitness and Fun. We feel it’s the triad that makes up health. But this year we are focusing on F-U-N. Working with people and through our own experiences, we have learned that life is hard. And the fun is the first thing to go. When the fun goes, the food and the fitness go. We’ll be the first to tell you this is true. Bad food takes the place of fun during difficult times. But it’s time to bring back fun! Not the fake documented laughs for a good Instagram photo, but the gut laughs! The kind that are so hard they are silent. Those are the best and can’t be captured for social media. Just the other night we were laying in bed and something made us both laugh so hard we were literally silent for 10 minutes with tears running down our cheeks and couldn’t stop. It was the most therapeutic 10 minutes and still makes us laugh even thinking about it.
Most people struggle with their health and weight due to emotions. Stress, depression, anxiety can all lead to a decline in health and ultimately weight gain. For health’s sake, this year, find a way (easier said than done) to have more fun! That might mean that something else has to take a back seat for a while. It might mean that your kids can’t play 5 sports at once. You have to set limitations to make room for fun. FOCUS on the good! When times are difficult you have to intentionally focus on the good. For us that means saying out loud what we’re thankful for. Most times it starts very small accompanied by an eye roll, “thankful for this cup of coffee…I guess. (under my breath) it’s not even that good.” But it’s amazing how it eventually clears your vision! Holy cow I have so much to be thankful for!
We’re looking forward to the future! This year, we hope you have more fun! We hope you can find the good and bring back the joy. Because joy is contagious and we could all use a little more of it. Don’t forget that EVERYONE is going through something. You may only see the happy face but “everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” Let’s all fight those battles with more FUN and have more compassion for one another along the way! We wish you more gut laughs in 2019!
Stay hopeful! Happy New Year!
A few tips to have more fun:
- Go for a drive. Often times going for a drive can boost your mood. It’s a way to get out of the house and discover new things.
- Go for a walk. When we get home from work we are usually so tired and don’t want to take the dogs for a walk. But we make ourselves and wind up talking and laughing.
- Play a game. Games aren’t for everyone, but it can usually trigger some laughter!
- Try something new. If someone wants to teach you something new, be open! And don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself along the way. The best is when I try to teach Kyle how to dance. It definitely gives me a gut laugh.
- Watch a funny movie. Sometimes we just need a little escape. A good movie can be just that.
What do you do to get out of a funk and have more fun?
